Art, Architecture and Public Space

The relationship between art and architecture is not new, but in recent times has gained a new relevance and prominence across a wide range of urban interventions. Accompanying the current social dynamics, artists and architects have found new ways of working and collaborating, creating new forms of inhabit and interacting in public space, through more participatory, ephemeral and performative spatial practices.
In this topic we propose the debate around the boundaries of inhabiting the ephemeral and build the performativity. We want to go beyond disciplinary boundaries, and understand what issues and relationships connect artists and architects in their practice of urban interventions, as well as the social, cultural and political dimensions of their activities in the city and in the urban context.

Urban Interventions: Mediation and Urban Planning

The artistic interventions in the public realm of cities encourage a change in the way the space is seen and perceived. Urban interventions, regardless of having their genesis in formal or informal dynamics, can be used as a mean to spark debate but also to enable new features in a location. They can make a public urban space more attractive; they can enable the creation of a place identity or they can even help in urban revitalization processes. In this way, urban interventions are often made viable by mediators, such as cultural promoters or urban planning institutes, driven by other aims than the own artist's goals.
Acknowledging the potential of urban interventions, the third topic of this conference addresses the mediation of urban interventions and the role of urban interventions in urban planning. We propose a debate among mediators in order to clarify their goals and realize how urban interventions can be inserted in urban planning.

Urban Interventions

A conferência será composta por três sessões: (i) Espaço Público, Esfera Pública e a Cidade

Urban Interventions

The public space is increasingly becoming an expression of the globalized world, where the thin boundaries between time and space, public and private, real and virtual are being dissolved. It is no longer just the institutional space of ideological representation, but rather the space of presentation and entertainment. Despite its evolution, the public space remains the place of interaction, encounter and a symbol of urban life.
In recent years, there have been new creative dynamics that through small interventions in public space, ephemeral or temporary, are introducing a new perspective on what is the city, and the urban life.
With this conference we want to debate this recent urban interventions and their importance in the current context of cities development, as well as the relationship between public space, public realm, art and architecture.
At a time when disciplinary boundaries are blurred and new creative dynamics are emerging with new approaches in public space, we want to emphasize the importance of these themes in the development of the contemporary city, as well as in the current work of artists, architects, urban planners and mediators.

Following the theme of the 2013 Lisbon Architecture Triennale, “Close, Closer”, the conference is composed by three sessions: (i) Public Space, Public Sphere and the Contemporary City; (ii) Art, Architecture and Public Space; and (iii) Urban Interventions: Mediation and Urban Planning.
These sessions will take place in two days, and will be complemented by a number of ephemeral urban interventions, that will be performed by some collectives and artists on the evening of the first day.

The attendance at theconference corresponds to two credits for Ordem dos Arquitectos.
